There is a good variety of beaches locally (pebble or sand) and excellent opportunities for walkers. The wild flowers in March and April are spectacular. We have a good selection of maps and books in the house to inspire you to explore. There are numerous cafes where you can sit in the shade with your Greek coffee and ouzo, maybe with a small plate of feta and the local olive oil from the famed Kalamata olives. Foodies will delight in the superb array of fresh local ingredients, twice-weekly food market in Kalamata, and the many excellent traditional tavernas and fish restaurants including the renowned Lela's nearby in Kardamyli.
The surrounding area of outstanding natural beauty is frequented by artists, writers, walkers and nature-lovers and those with a love of Byzantine churches and Mani tower-houses. Patrick Leigh-Fermor and Bruce Chatwin have both drawn inspiration from the area.
As our house is in an old village you can experience the traditional celebrations of Greek Easter, 1st May, the summer Panayiri, weddings and christenings etc. - still a big part of local village life.
N.B Michael Cullen's book 'Landscapes of the S. Peloponnese' (Sunflower Books ISBN 1-85691-224-8) is a fantastic book of car tours, walks and picnic spots for all ages and abilities!
